Sooner or later it was bound to happen. We have been pretty lucky with the weather so far. Apart from Chicago, we had sunny days everywhere we went. Until today. Missoula would be an interesting town if only we could walk about. The clouds are so low that you cannot even see the hills around, it rains steadily and it's virtually impossible to do anything. After driving around the downtown area, which reminds me of Bozeman but still in the process of being gentrified, we decide to hit the commercial North Reserve Street and go shopping. After all we need groceries - there is Costco here - and if the weather continues to get cold we are not equipped with winter stuff.
We find an outdoors superstore and realize it is targeted mainly to hunting and fly fishing. It's interesting to see the people around the store, mostly dressed in military and camouflage gear. They are so different from the type of crowd you'd find in a sporting goods store on the East coast, but then again the store itself would not exist there! It's disturbing to see the gun and rifle displays. It's sad to see the taxidermy mounts on the walls, for sale, of full-size grizzlies, elks, mooses, deer and - to my astonishment - even rabbits with antlers, the so-called jackalopes. We decide that there is nothing for us in such a place. We basically waste the rest of the day going from one store to the other, not buying anything, including a stop at Starbucks where I took advantage of a T-Mobile hotspot to check e-mail, answer work-related stuff, talk to Francesca via Skype and keep writing this diary.
Back to camp early, I cook up a healthy meal for myself (Petr ate pizza at Costco) and we curl up in bed to watch a movie. A few days earlier we had bought a quadruple feature at Wal-Mart for $5.50 - 2 DVDs with 4 movies, although I never heard of the titles, they feature Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones and Danny Glover, so that's somewhat reassuring. We watch Death of a Prophet, with M. Freeman, which recounts the last 24 hours in the life of Malcom X. Petr falls asleep after 10 minutes, I stubbornly watch it until the end just because. Lesson: don't ever let cheap movies tempt you!!!! |
